On the Bayou

Me with author and historian Fred Mackenzie
The weekend before New Year’s we took an impromptu trip to Jefferson to hang out, eat, and ride the railway. We meandered through the streets lazily when we arrived. There was the obligatory trip to the Jefferson General store where we (just as always) with enthusiasm declared “Oh my gosh LOOK at THIS!” several hundred times. Then we window shopped while making our way to the famous hamburger store.
Along the way we happened upon a charming bookstore that I had never noticed before. It was in a large turn of the century home, and upon entering, I immediately fell in love with everything about it. The old wood floors were squeaky, there were big sunny windows, and every square foot of wall space, and then some, was absolutely covered in used books. It smelled like my old school library, but better (one of my favorite smells in the whole world…old books.) Big band music softly lulled in the background, there was an immaculately maintained 1950’s bicycle for two decorated for a parade leaning against the wall in the foyer. It honestly felt like we were guests in someone’s warm, cozy home. There were photographs and news clippings on any spare wall space.
Standing in the doorway I noticed a kindly man chatting with some patrons. I leaned into Aaron’s ear and whispered “that must be the owner of this place, and I want to be his new friend.” I meant what I said too.
After wandering for several minutes I walked up to the proprietor and introduced myself. His name is Mr. Fred Mackenzie. He is an author, and historian, big band lover, WWII veteran, life enthusiast, pilot, and all ’round fascinating man. Oh, and that bicycle built for two? He has been riding that same bike in the Jefferson parades for a total of 50 years!
We chatted for quite some time, and he asked me what my maiden name was. When I told him he threw his head back and gave and enthusiastic clap of his hands. He knew my family well, and showed me his book Hickory Hill. My whole family lineage was in it. Pictures of my grandparents, and great grandparents on both sides were in his book also. I, of course, bought it and he so kindly autographed it for me.
If you go to Jefferson. Stop by Books on the Bayou, and take a moment to meet Fred. He is an absolute delight, and I promise you he will brighten your day!

What an adorable photo. I would love to go back over there with you and see the store. I’ve always wanted to see that beauty shop that sells books in Jefferson, too! Let’s go soon.

P.S. What does that clipping in the background of the photo say about Nancy Drew?

Ah, yes, Crystal…Beauty and the Book. That’s a whole ‘nother post. Mr. Fred told me all about Kathy Patrick (the owner.) They are best friends. I say a book club field trip is in order!

I can’t remember what the clipping said. There were interesting artifacts, pictures, and clippings absolutely EVERYWHERE.
