School lunch or gym membership?

I have two children in school. Both have been eating “hot lunch” at school for going on four years, and the other going on three years. In reading the school lunch section that Amy Dacyczyn writes about in her book The Tight Wad Gazette I realized, “duh, this is a significant money suck!” Amy came up with a chart that shows what each meal option costs (circa 1994.) School lunch is the second most expensive option. Sending a lunch full of prepackaged convenience foods is the most expensive option. Ah, but sending a simple, yet nutritious meal of left overs, or pb&j with veggies cost pennies in comparison.

So, how much do I spend on feeding my kids at school you ask? Well, it is 1.40 per child per day five days a week. That ads up to 14.00 per week, 56.00 per month, and 504.00 per year. Nearly the cost of a family membership to a nice heath club here. That’s quite a lot of savings in the long run.

I also send Aaron’s lunch. Myself and the remaining child at home usually munch on left overs or a sandwich. We are the least picky eaters in the family, so that works out well for us. Not so well for the others sometimes. This morning we had a lunch mix up. Aaron just informed me that he will be having a sippy cup of organic milk, pb&j on ww bread, a handful of carrots and five kettle chips for lunch. Poor Lucas is stuck with an apple, tuna on wheat, and low-fat yogurt with berries.

On an aside note, I love to get fresh ideas from other bloggers like veganlunchbox.com (even thought we are not vegheads, I used to be, and yummy, is yummy, is yummy right? Jessica Seinfeld was on Oprah promoting her new book Deceptively Delicious , and I must say that this is one book I’m putting on my Christmas list. Great ideas, and yummy recipes galore! And my girl Rachel Ray had lunch box make overs on her show yesterday. Hello “Fun”-due…mmmm, mmmm, mmmm!

  1. Russell’s school lunches cost 1.75 and they’re very heavy and fattening. It is a pain to pack a lunch, but the money savings and health benefits make me grit my teeth and do it even when I don’t want to. He loves it when we make “lunchables”. I just put crackers in one ziplock bag, slices of cheddar cheese in another and a few slices of meat in another. Sometimes I cut the cheese with small cookie cutters, but that’s only like once in a blue moon. I’ve also heard of doing the pizza lunchables and taco lunchables. If I call it a lunchable, Russ thinks it’s great! :-)

Randall enjoyed watching the Rachel Ray clip. He said, “And I like all that stuff!” :-)

  2. Oh, I know, not only is school food bad for you (holy sodium batman!) it is expensive…1.75!?

Lucas’ teacher says he eats SO much better now that I send his lunch. Aaron will eat bad too if I don’t make food. He usually has a big green salad with lots of veggies, a boiled egg, a piece of fruit. Way better than mexican food :) Well, better *for* him.

  3. I’m with ya sister. Ainsley takes her lunch. I send $20 so that she’ll never go without lunch in case I wake up late one day or as a treat. It’s $1.75 and it’s not very good food.

I make enough dinner for Jeremy to take for lunch the next day. But, I make him make his own. (He wouldnt’ like the healthy one I send.)

And this morning I cancelled the gym membership. I am not close to 200 lbs anymore. It’s not 103 degrees right now so I can force myself to exercise outside. $70 is too much. I can buy a bike seat for the baby and the city offers yoga for $35.

    I’m gonna get that house.

    You’re an inspiration to me.

  4. Good for you Tracee. Go get it woman.
