A New Hope

yogabbagabba758226or1.jpgPeople, the world as we know it has tumbled through a crevasse in the space-time continuum and it is 1971 all over again thanks to Nick Jr.’s new show, Yo Gabba Gabba. Admittedly, Teletubbies scared the bajeezus out of me when I first saw them. Barney made me want to tear at my flesh, and was forbidden from my household long before my children were conceived. Boohbah, at best, seemed to be a severe hallucination from all those sleep deprived early days after the twins were born. And then, then Doodle Bops. They are rock star clowns. ‘Nuff said. Children’s programing, I felt, had gone to an all time low.

yogaybagayba_2.jpgThere were only a handful of shows to choose from when I was a kid, and they were awesome, and educational.

Yo Gabba Gabba, as my husband pegged it, was probably created by all the adults who watched The Electric company as kids and wanted something as delightfully bizarre for this generation to relish. I was more of a Sesame Street fan myself, and went out to play shortly after the Electric Co. came on. I do however recall the bow-wicka-bow-wicka-bow-wicka… funky beat that the show started out with, and of course the “Hey you guuuuuuuys!”

No patronizing kids songs either on Yo Gabba Gabba. With a line up including The Shins, Biz Markie, Mark Mothersbaugh, Supernova, The Postmarks, and even a dancing Elijah Wood, there is hope for this kids’ show to be fun, educational, and cool (did I mention Tony Hawk made an appearance).

  1. Yo Gabba Gabba is just plain super cool.

Kudos to those guys and gals for not being afraid of being too left brain. Not everything has to make sense, if everything did, wouldn’t the world be a bit borning?

  2. Looks right up Zack’s ally. I still adore Sesame Street, not so much all the rest. Mr. Z loves to jam out.

  3. What happened to the classics of bugs bunny and road runner? I’ve recently reintroduced them to the kids and they laugh and laugh and laugh.

  4. Steph,

I bet someone said the same thing when Captain Kangaroo came out :)
