Sicko

I went to see SICKO with my book club ladies Monday night. We went to a close by restaurant afterwards to discuss the film over a few bottles of wine, and it was very interesting to hear all the different takes about the broken system in this country we call health care. (IMO it should be called sick care .)
Three of the six of us worked in the health care industry, so they saw a different side of the system than the rest of us. I can’t fault those who have “good” insurance who have never had a catastrophic illness or accident happen to them for thinking that our current system is just dandy. They have never been forced to see how devastating medical costs can be to your average American.
I do not want to be the middle aged couple who works hard their entire life. That have the house, car, 2.5 kids, 401K, etc… Then to have it all ripped away because one of us had a stroke, or got cancer. Who wants to go bankrupt in retirement because you can’t afford treatments, and prescriptions after being dropped like a hot potato by our insurance company?
It happens every single day. If you turn on the news you will see stories of people who are refused medical care because they have no insurance. People who are left to die because they are poor. No one deserves that. Ever. We are America for God’s sake. The greatest country in the world, yet there is the disease of the “I got mine, so you go get yours” mentality. I makes me sick. The decision of weather or not someone lives or dies should not be based on profit margins, but it is.
My husband said “it’s a shame that Michael Moore had to be the one to make this movie because no one will take it seriously.” Sadly, I agree. I never was a fan of Mr. Moore, but when he made a film about our health care system I turned out to see it. If you know me, you know that this is one of my biggest issues. It is something I feel passionate about, and want to raise awareness of.
Even if you abhor Micheal Moore it’s still worth it to see this eye opening, shocking, heartbreaking, and funny film.
